Physical Development
Babies first accomplishments include holding their own head up and rolling over
By the time they reach 1 year, they are crawling and even walking or preparing to walk. They intentional pick up objects to explore.
Language
Babies begin cooing and imitating sounds.
By the end of twelve months they will say a few words such as “mama, dada, no, uh-oh”
Cognitive Development
Infants can follow sound by turning their head or body towards sound
Infants may recognize and respond to simple requests.
Atypical Development
If the infant is not mobile by the end of twelve months, this could indicate abnormal development.
The infant does not respond to sounds or voices of familiar people.
The infant is not curious about exploring objects near or around them.
Strategies to Help Development
Parents and caretakers should read, talk and interact with the infant as much as possible. Parents provide opportunities for child to explore surroundings in a safe environment.
Toddlerhood: 18 months-Three years old

Child will attempt to be self sufficient such as trying to feed themselves or climb to retrieve a desired object.

Child will enjoy simple short stories.
They will understand simple requests and put together two phrase requests themselves such as “more milk.”

May begin to understand concepts of object permanence.
Will begin to experiment with cause and effect such as stacking blocks and pushing them over
Atypical Development
Atypical development may include a failure to thrive. This includes the child not walking or attempting to be independent such as feeding themselves or retrieving objects for themselves.
Not responding to interaction may also be also be a sign of atypical development. Also, if a toddler is not attempting to get into everything, they are probably experiencing abnormal development.
